Signs You Need a Blood Test —
Do Not Ignore These Symptoms
Most serious health conditions — diabetes, anaemia, thyroid disease, kidney disease — give warning signs weeks or months before they become dangerous. Your body is trying to tell you something. Here are the 10 signs you should not ignore and what blood tests they point to.

10 Signs You Need a Blood Test Right Away
😴 Unexplained Fatigue Lasting More Than 2 Weeks
Persistent tiredness that doesn't improve with rest is the most common reason people need a blood test. In India, the top causes are iron deficiency anaemia (57% of Indian women), hypothyroidism, vitamin D deficiency, vitamin B12 deficiency and undiagnosed diabetes.
💇 Significant Hair Loss or Thinning
Sudden or progressive hair fall in both men and women is strongly linked to thyroid disorders, iron deficiency, vitamin D deficiency, protein deficiency and hormonal imbalances. Do not start supplements without testing first — the cause determines the solution.
⚖️ Unexplained Weight Gain or Weight Loss
Gaining weight despite a controlled diet — or losing weight without trying — are classic red flags. Weight gain often points to hypothyroidism or insulin resistance (pre-diabetes). Unexplained weight loss can indicate hyperthyroidism, diabetes or rarely more serious conditions.
🤒 Frequent Infections, Colds or Slow Healing
Getting sick more than 4–5 times a year, or wounds that take unusually long to heal, suggest immune dysfunction. This can be caused by poorly controlled diabetes (high blood sugar impairs immunity), vitamin D deficiency, iron deficiency or undetected autoimmune conditions.
💧 Excessive Thirst and Frequent Urination
This combination is the classic warning sign of diabetes. High blood sugar draws water from the body, causing thirst and increased urination. Many Indians have Type 2 diabetes for years before it is diagnosed. By the time symptoms appear, the condition is often already advanced.
🦴 Bone or Muscle Pain — Especially Back and Legs
Persistent aching in bones, lower back, hips or legs that is not explained by injury or arthritis is a primary symptom of vitamin D deficiency and calcium deficiency. In India this is commonly mistaken for "body pain" and ignored for years.
🌊 Swelling of Legs, Ankles or Face
Oedema (fluid retention causing puffiness) in the legs, ankles or around the eyes is a warning sign of kidney disease, liver disease, heart failure or hypothyroidism. These are serious conditions requiring immediate blood and urine tests.
👁️ Yellow Skin or Eyes (Jaundice)
Yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes is caused by elevated bilirubin — always a liver or blood condition requiring urgent investigation. Possible causes include hepatitis, liver disease, haemolytic anaemia or bile duct obstruction.
💔 Palpitations, Dizziness or Shortness of Breath
Heart palpitations at rest, unexplained dizziness or breathlessness on minimal exertion suggest anaemia (low haemoglobin), thyroid disease (hyperthyroidism causes palpitations) or electrolyte imbalance. These symptoms warrant immediate blood tests.
🧠 Persistent Brain Fog, Memory Loss or Depression
Difficulty concentrating, forgetting things easily, feeling mentally slow or persistently low in mood — without an obvious psychological cause — is strongly linked to hypothyroidism, vitamin B12 deficiency, vitamin D deficiency and anaemia. These are all blood-test-detectable and highly treatable.
In India, most serious chronic diseases — diabetes, thyroid disease, anaemia, vitamin deficiencies — are caught late because people wait until symptoms become severe. A basic blood test panel covering the 10–15 most important markers costs ₹199–₹1,999 at home. It can detect conditions that would otherwise take years and tens of thousands of rupees to treat.

When to Get a Blood Test Even Without Symptoms
Many conditions cause no symptoms in the early stages — including pre-diabetes, early kidney disease, fatty liver and subclinical hypothyroidism. Annual blood tests are recommended for:
- All adults over 30 — once a year minimum
- All diabetic patients — every 3–6 months
- All hypertensive patients — every 6 months
- Women over 25 — thyroid test annually
- Anyone with a family history of diabetes, heart disease or kidney disease
